Mgr. Dr. phil. Viktor Velek, Ph.D.

Viktor Velek graduated from th eFaculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia (Mgr. 2000, Teaching German Language and Music), the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (PhD. 2010, Musicology) and the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, University of Vienna (Dr. Phil. 2008, Musicology). The topics of his theses were reflected in the selection of scholarships he gained abroad (2004 Leipzig, several times in Vienna). In 2012 he started teaching at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava, where he is currently the Head of the Department of the Theory and History of Fine Arts. His portfolio includes occasional cooperation with Czech Television and Czech Radio. In the years 2019–2023 he will be a member of the research team of the project “Old Myths, New Facts” (project EXPRO, GACR), realized in cooperation with the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. 

• musical form of Czech historical national traditions and phenomena (e.g. St Wenzesalus, Charles IV in music, J. A. Comenius and his receptionin music, Slavic reciprocity, and the national anthem Where is my home?) 
• study of reception of Mister Jan Hus and Husitism in 19th and 20th-centuries musical culture
• the musical life of Viennese Czechs and Slavs in the 19th and 20th centuries
• the common music history of the Czechs and the Lusatians
• musical migration 

 
In the project “Old Myths, New Facts” he will focus on the research of Jan Hus's second life and the Hussite movement in the music culture of the 19th and 20th centuries: especially musical monuments, issues of musical quotation, issues of “conflict” in music (political, religious, national, and social), social context, interdisciplinary overlaps, social and spiritual traditions, censorship, international scope, and musical iconography.
